Geocaching with Kids
Geocaching is one of our newest obsessions to do on campouts or just on a free weekend. It is a great activity to do with kids and is so much fun.
What is Geocaching
Geocaching is an outdoor activity using a GPS to locate a Cache or a hidden item. It can be anywhere and anything. It’s like a treasure hunt using your phone to track down an obscure object. Some are easy to find, others nearly impossible.
How to Play
The first thing you need to do is download the app Geocaching. This app will direct you to the geocaches nearest to you with a green dot. You click the geocache you are going to try and find and the app will help you locate the cache in a general direction. It will get you close to the cache, but it’s up to you to actually find it.
My kids love holding the phone and following the orange line to their treasure counting down the distance as they go. It teaches them how to navigate.
Hints are given to help you out as well as a brief description of the geocache.
When you are lucky enough to find one, you can mark that you found it and a happy face will appear on your map. If you can’t find it a sad face will appear. You are able to leave comments at each find on the app, but also with the find itself. Don’t forget to bring a pen to write your name and date that you found it.
Now you will notice the gray circles on the map. These geocaches are harder to find and need the upgrade to Premium to find. We haven’t upgraded, yet. We have enough trouble finding the easy ones, but if this becomes your hobby it would be a good investment. Right now, we are just amateurs trying it out for fun.
