Easy No Sew Camping Blanket
We learned to make easy no sew blankets as part of my son’s Eagle Scout project. He oversaw the making of 75 blankets that were donated to the police. Officers will give the blankets to kids in crisis situations. The blankets are a way for the police to comfort kids and help ease the stressful situation they may be in.
So many blankets! But well worth it.
This method is perfect for making the coziest camping blanket on those chilly nights around the campfire. Just follow a few simple steps.
Supplies for a No Sew Camping Blanket
Below is a brief list of supplies needed to make a fleece no sew camping blanket.
- Fleece Material ( any size and pattern that you wish) My camping blanket is 2 yards, so I bought a total of 4 yards in two different patterns. Two yard for the front and two yards for the back of the blanket. I found my fabric at Joann.
- Yard Stick
- Painter’s Tape
- Post-It Note
- Cutting Template (make your own out of cardboard or plastic, 1” by 3″.
- Fabric Scissors
Step One
The first thing I did was cut the salvage from the fleece material. Don’t worry if it’s a bit crooked.
Step 2
The next step is to align your materials together, wrong side facing each other. Having a large table to work on is helpful.
I needed to trim mine so that both pieces were even.
Step 3
I then cut all four corners of the two layers of material. Using a Post-It note helps. It is the perfect size and stays in place. I double checked that the material was aligned evenly and then cut the corners.
Step 4
Next I used the yard stick as guide when I placed the painter’s tape on the blanket. This will help to gauge how far up to cut, about 3 “.
Step 5
I then used my cutting template to cut strips in the fleece fabric. Having the template keeps the strips the same size. I found it easier for me to cut all the strips first before tying, but others like to do a side at a time. Do what works best for you!
Step 6
Finally I tied the strips together. Take the front and the back of the material’s strips and using just a basic knot tie them together. Double knot the strips to keep them from untying.
I occasionally had to pull on the fabric as I went, so the knots wouldn’t bunch up.
I tied the strips together all around the blanket and in no time, or a couple of hours later, I had the perfect camping blanket.
The blanket turned out beautifully and was a snap to make! What I loved about making this blanket was that it didn’t need to be cut perfectly to turn out so pretty. This is one comfy blanket that I can’t wait to take on my next camping trip!
Happy Camping!
