Generators
Generators become very popular and scarce during an approaching hurricane. If you have the room buy one early while it is in stock and tax free. Generators are tax free up to $1,000.
The DuroMax pictured above has good reviews for dependability and is gas powered. Never use it inside an enclosed structure. Every hurricane season people die from carbon monoxide poisoning because they did not use the generator correctly. Don’t be the next statistic.
I am looking into buying a solar generator that can power just a fan and our electronics during a power outage and for camping trips when the electric is not provided. The Jackery Solar Generator has great reviews and looks to be a great option. I also don’t have to worry finding gas or propane to run it, which I found out run out quickly the days before a hurricane hits. You just need to pray for sunny skies after the hurricane hits.
Coolers
Coolers are a staple during a hurricane. Keep your ice and drinks cool in this well reviewed Coleman cooler. Coolers are tax free under $60.
Portable Power Bank
A fully charged portable power bank is an important item to have on hand during an emergency. It is a fantastic way to charge your cell phone to keep abreast of important notifications, warnings and to keep in contact with family members. A charged cell phone could be your lifeline during an emergency. Find this highly rated power bank here. Power banks are tax free up to $60.
Flashlights and Lanterns
Flashlights and lanterns are tax exempt up to $40. You can find some great options to use during a power outage or a camping trip. Here are a few below to consider.
This popular flashlight from Gearlight can be found here.
These mini flashlights are perfect to keep in your go bag, bathrooms and just for the kids to play with. We always have them on hand during hurricane season. You can find the ones above here.
These lanterns would be useful in an emergency or camping trip. They are highly rated with good reviews. You can find them here.
Weather Radio
A weather radio is a must during any weather related emergency. When the power goes out you need a way to keep connected and know of any important announcements. You can find this multi-function one below here.
Batteries
You are going to need all sizes of batteries during a power outage. Stock up now while they are tax free. Find this battery combo pack here.
Tarps
Always keep tarps on hand. They are essential in any emergency for shelter or to make quick repairs on roofs. You can find this multi pack here.
Hurricane Kit
Make sure to stock up your hurricane kit before a storm approaches. There is always a shortage as the panic starts in. Keep a stock of canned goods and nonperishable goods on hand. Restock your first aide kit or buy a fully stocked one here. Make sure to have plenty of bottled water, another item that can become scarce when a storm is approaching.
If you have kids, have their favorite snacks on hand. It will give them comfort and keep the peace. I always have Oreos and Pop Tarts on hand. Not the healthiest, but it keeps them happy. When you are without power in the sweltering heat for a few days comfort food goes a long way.
Also don’t forget the manual can opener in your emergency kit!
Glow Sticks
While glow sticks are not tax free my helpful hint is keep a few handy. They will keep the kids entertained, and reassure the little ones about not being scared of the dark. You can also use them to light pathways in the house.
Be Prepared
Florida can be a magnet for storms during the hurricane season. Be prepared this season. Even if you miss the tax free days, still stock up on the essential supplies well before that cone of uncertainty has you in its crosshairs. For more information on Florida Hurricane Preparedness click here.
Although this list is more geared towards Florida residents it can be used for any emergency. As my Scouts say “Be Prepared”.
