A Weekend Camping Trip To Tomoka State Park, Florida

Take a step back in time and enjoy a weekend of camping at the Tomoka State Park, Florida. A timeless park full of history, and scenic settings to relax in.

Brief History

Tomoka became a state park in 1945, but it has a vast history of welcoming visitors.

Be sure to visit the Tomoka Point and explore what use to be the site of the Timucuam Native American Village, Nocoroco. The village dates back to at least 1300 years ago. This was a thriving village until the devastation of European diseases decimated the Native American population.

Several plantations were also established in this area, most notably that of Richard Oswald.

Be sure to view the “Legend of Chief Tomokie”, a statue built by local artist Fred Dana Marsh.

Campsites

Campsites at the state park can be small, be sure to check the measurements of available campsites before making a reservation. Reservations can be made here.

Most sites are compacted sand in nicely wooded areas. Bath houses are evenly spaced throughout the campground. All sites come with electric and water hook ups. There is a dump station conveniently located near the exit.

The campsites also have a fire ring, and a picnic table.

We noticed that there are a lot of mosquitoes in the park. We used our Thermacell in our campsite and it did help keep the little vampires in check. Be sure to have bug spray on hand for any outdoor activities in the park.

Tomoka OutPost

Tomoka Outpost

No trip to the park is complete until you visit the Tomoka Outpost. This is the place to get firewood, ice, snacks and even a beer. The kayak and canoe rentals are also available at the outpost.

Be sure to try the salt water taffy!

Kayaking and Canoeing

Absolutely take the time to explore the Tomoka River by kayak or canoe. This puts you up close and personal to the wildlife surrounding the area.

Our views from the canoe were spectacular. It’s a lot of work when paddling back up stream, especially if there is wind, but it was so worth it.

Ormond Beach

Ormond Beach

The trip from the campsite to Ormond Beach is about 15 to 20 minutes, depending on which beach entrance you choose.

We really liked the parking area at the Andy Romano Beachfront Park. This is a great park for kids with a play area and a splash pad. It is a nice place to park, if you don’t want to park on the beach and worry about getting stuck in the sand.

Remember to get up early and view the amazing sunrise over the ocean. The morning we went was a bit cloudy, but still amazing to watch.

The beach is a great way to cool off during the heat of a Florida summer.
