Make a Giant Christmas Cookie in a Dutch Oven
This giant Christmas cookie is sure to be a hit on your holiday camping adventures. A sweet treat to end a day of winter camping fun. And it is a snap to make with a pre-made cookie mix.
Giant Christmas Cookie Recipe
- Pre-Made Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix
- Butter or Oil
- Egg
- 1/2 Cup Chocolate Candies
- 1/2 Cup White Chocolate Chips
In a large bowl, pour the pre-made chocolate chip cookie mix. Follow the directions on the package to mix. Add chocolate candies and white chocolate chips to the mix. Pour directly into a pre-seasoned Dutch Oven or use a liner. Place 14 hot briquettes on the top lid of the Dutch Oven and seven underneath for a temperature of 350º. Bake for approximately 25 minutes or until done. Baking times will vary.
Ingredients
According to the cookie mix I bought, I only needed to add an egg and butter. But because I have a lactose-intolerant son who loves cookies, I used the directions for the oil substitution. They still turn out great no matter which you choose.
After mixing the cookie dough, add the white chocolate chips and chocolate candy pieces. I did add a few on top after pouring into the Dutch Oven for added color.
Directions
Be sure to mix the dough well. This can be tough outside, without your usual appliances and using just arms.
Add the candy and white chocolate chips. I added about half of a cup of each, but you can do more or less. It is up to you!
After mixing, pour the cookie dough either directly into a well-seasoned Dutch Oven, foil Dutch Oven liner or line the oven with parchment paper. I have made this cookie several times. The best results were with the parchment paper. This is also why you see pictures with both the foil liner and the parchment paper in this post. If you are using parchment paper, depending on the size of your Dutch Oven, you may need to cut the paper to fit inside your particular Dutch Oven.
If using the foil liner, be sure it is well-greased before putting the cookie dough into it.
Spread the cookie out and firmly pat down for even baking. If you are using parchment paper, the cookie might not be as circular as if using the foil liner, but no one will mind.
Baking
Make sure to have your briquettes ready for baking. I have found that using a chimney is a fast and efficient way to get them ready.
With this Christmas Cookie, I placed seven briquettes underneath the Dutch Oven and 14 on the top lid. This gets the Dutch Oven to 350º. I use a Lodge 10-inch Dutch Oven. If you use a different size of Dutch Oven, check the briquette chart that came with your oven or use this chart.
Baking times will vary, especially when using a Dutch Oven. Check the cookie at the 20-minute mark and make adjustments. You may need to rotate the lid if one side is getting more brown. A lid lifter is a great gadget to have on hand for this.
The cookie should be done between the 20-25 minute mark. Do not overbake.
Dutch Oven baking can be a bit frustrating. I have made this cookie several times with mixed results, from burning the bottom because the briquettes were too hot not to have the center fully cooked. Don’t give up if you have a Dutch Oven disaster. Your next creation may be absolute perfection.
