A Quick Visit to Camp Helen State Park, Florida
We did a quick stop at Camp Helen State Park, located near Panama City Beach in Florida. This picturesque park was a joy to explore even on a rainy day. The park was just a short drive from our cabin at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park where we were staying for the weekend.
History of Camp Helen
Camp Helen has a long history as it changes hands throughout time. Habitation dating back to 500 BC show evidence that it was the home to several indigenous people. Native Americans made this area their home because of diverse landscape as well as abundant fishing and wildlife resources.
The land was purchased by Robert Hicks in the late 1920’s as a vacation spot because of the fishing, white sandy beaches and beautiful views of the gulf. The construction of the Lodge as a summer retreat for the family began in the early 1930’s. The Rainbow Cottages were built around this time as well.
Camp Helen, named after the daughter-in-law of a textile mill owner, became the corporate vacation getaway for the employees of Avondale Mills of Alabama. It was used as a vacation resort for the company up until 1987.
The state of Florida purchased the camp in 1996 and was opened up as an official state park in 1997. The original buildings can be seen today. Nine of the buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places. And no, you can not climb the water tower, much to the disappointment of my son.

Walking Tour to the Beach
Besides getting a stamp in our Florida State Park book, we visited Camp Helen for its views of the Gulf of Mexico. Be sure to take the self guided tour through the marsh, past the protected dunes and you will reach a stretch of unspoiled white sandy beach that will take your breath away.
Pick up a map at the visitor’s center before heading out. The staff here are helpful and knowledgeable about the park. They will give you helpful tips for your day of exploring the area.
