Finding the Right Trail at the Maquoketa Caves State Park
We spent a day at Maquoketa Caves in Maquoketa, Iowa finding the right trail to take us to some amazing caves to explore. This state park is one of the most popular in Iowa for a good reason. It is a breathtakingly beautiful place to have a mini adventure that the whole family will love.
Maquoketa Caves State Park
The Maquoketa Caves State Park is one the oldest parks in Iowa after its establishment in 1933. It has a history as a place to seek refuge and outdoor entertainment. It still is a popular place for families to explore together. There are 13 caves to find in the park along with a balanced rock, and a natural land bridge. There are plenty of steps to keep you active as you climb up and down the trails.
Be sure to grab a map or take a picture of one posted. It was easy for us to get turned around in the park, not always knowing which way we were going.
Exploring Caves
My youngest son is a huge fan of exploring caves. The Maquoketa Caves were amazing to view. His favorite caves were the Dancehall Cave system and the Up-N-Down Cave. The Dancehall is huge, consisting of the Upper, Middle, and Lower parts.
The Up-N-Down Cave is not for those scared of tight spaces, which is me. I didn’t try to enter this one, but my husband and son did. Getting in and out of it was the tricky part.
There are lights in the Dancehall Cave, but a few were out when we were there. The rest of the caves do not have lighting. We are so glad we brought our flashlight and headlamps. Don’t forget to bring them when exploring the caves. Also, wear shoes with traction, no flip-flops. The trails can be slippery, watch your step!
Hiking
There are miles of trails in the park to traverse. Some lead to the caves and others explore the park. The hiking trails are a great way to get your exercise in while experiencing amazing views of the park.
Camping
Camping is available at the park. Visit Iowa State Parks, Camping for more information or to make a reservation. Reservations can be made from March, 1 – November 30.
Before You Go
For more information on the park visit Maquoketa Caves State Park. The latest news on the park, parking, and general information will be found on their website.
Help protect the bats from the White-Nose syndrome. Make sure to clean your gear if it was ever used exploring other caves or places where bats reside. Keep your distance from the bats as well.
Have a great adventure exploring the park!
