Candy Cane Gingerbread in a Dutch Oven

Make Christmas memories around the campfire or backyard fire pit with your family, making Candy Cane Gingerbread in the Dutch Oven. This simple, family-friendly dessert will bring the whole family together.

Candy Cane Gingerbread Recipe

  • Boxed Gingerbread Cake Mix (14.5 OZ)
  • Canned Ginger Ale – 1/2 a Can
  • Container of Cream Cheese Frosting
  • 3-4 Crushed Candy Canes
  • 1/3 Cup White Chocolate Chips

Pour the cake mix directly into a well-seasoned Dutch oven or an oiled Dutch oven liner. Next, pour only about half of the can of ginger ale. Mix well until everything is blended. Place 7 briquettes on the bottom of the Dutch oven and 14 on the top lid to reach a temperature of 350º. Bake for approximately 25 minutes or until done. Baking times will vary. Let cool before frosting and topping with crushed candy canes and white chocolate chips.

Ingredients

Ingredients for Candy Cane Gingerbread

The ingredients are simple and perfect for a camping trip. The gingerbread mix I found was a bit smaller than I expected. The first time I made the cake mix, I used the whole can of ginger ale, resulting in a runny mess that would not bake through. I tried again, using only half the can, and it turned out perfect. Have the kids crush the candy canes by placing broken candy canes in a baggy and smashing them. I used the metal camping cup in the picture, and it worked out well. Use as many or as few of the white chocolate chips as you like. Use your favorite brands of the ingredients.

Mixing

Pour only half of the can into the gingerbread cake mix. Not the whole can unless you are using two boxes of the cake mix. I didn’t, so not sure how that would turn out. Stir until the mix is blended together.

Baking

Baking Dutch Oven Candy Cane Gingerbread

You will need to prepare your briquettes before baking. We have found that the easiest way to do this is by using a chimney. When you deem the briquettes ready, place 7 underneath the Dutch oven and 14 on the top lid to reach a baking temperature of 350º. We use a 10″ Dutch Oven. If your oven is a different size, you will need to follow the chart that came with your oven or use this baking chart for help. I used a Dutch oven liner when I made my gingerbread so that I could take it out of the Dutch oven to frost it.

I baked the gingerbread for approximately 25 minutes. Baking times will vary, especially when using a Dutch oven.
