Hiking Ravine Gardens
It was a beautiful day to be outside in Florida yesterday. We took the opportunity to take a day trip and explore Ravine Gardens State Park. This is a unique park to hike especially if you want a bit of a challenge.
Ravine
The ravine in Ravine Gardens was naturally made by the Whitewater Branch spring that eventually drains into the St. Johns River. This spring-fed creek formed the ravine over thousands of years. It is a marvel to look at and explore.
Azalea Trail
Hiking the Ravine Gardens was a challenge for us. We are not avid hikers by any means so hiking the Azalea Trail was a workout, but don’t let that stop you. If you are physically able to hike, try this trail. If not, there is another trail and a paved loop so that you can still experience this beautiful park.
The Azalea Trail is rated difficult and after hiking this 2.5 mile trail we found out why. It was so much fun though, definitely worth the effort.
The suspension bridges alone make this hike worth it. My boys loved them. We went over two of them. The second one, I think was a short cut, so we went on it and came back so we could stay on the Azalea Trail. It had great views from the center of the bridge, so definitely check it out.
The trail goes up and down, with old stone staircases and tree roots ready to trip you. It can be a rough path to follow at times. You will want to watch your step on this trail.
Plan Your Trip
While visiting and hiking Ravine Garden State Park is great to do anytime of the year I read that during the Azalea bloom, January to March, it is a site to see. The gardens at the park are beautiful anytime of the year, but I would have loved to have seen all the Azaleas in bloom.
If you are planning on hiking the trails at the park make sure to bring water and apply bug spray. Also comfortable, closed toed shoes would be recommenced. Save the flips flops for the beach.
More Info
Check out the Ravine Gardens State Park web site to find more information on this park. I didn’t scratch the surface of how unique and interesting this park is.
This was a great day trip to take in Florida. We hiked in the morning and then drove to Flagler Beach about an hour away to spend the afternoon relaxing at the beach. It was a great day and a great way to start the summer. Two things checked off our Summer Bucket List too!
Have a great summer finding new adventures!
