Dutch Oven No Knead Bread
It is another hot day in Florida, so I course I try to make Dutch Oven No Knead Bread outside. I am so excited about this bread! It turned out beautifully the first time I made it. If you have read any of my Dutch oven posts you already know how rare this is.
This simple recipe is very versatile. I have used it to make cinnamon rolls, pizza dough, French bread, and now No Knead Bread.
Ingredients
- 3 Cups Flour (1/2 cup for reserve)
- 1 Package of Yeast
- 1 Tablespoon Sugar
- 1/4 Teaspoon Salt
- 1 Cup Warm Water
- Olive Oil
These are simple ingredients that are easy to pack for a camping trip or ones that you already have on hand at home. Nothing fancy.
Directions
You want to start this recipe by gathering the above ingredients. Begin by opening your yeast packet and pouring it into a bowl. Next pour a cup of warm water, not hot, over the yeast. Let is set a few minutes to activate.
In another bowl mix together 2 1/2 cups of flour, the salt and sugar together. Pour the mixture over the yeast and stir together.
You may need to add a bit of the reserve flour to make the dough less sticky.
Once you have the dough mixed well, making sure it doesn’t stick to your fingers, place it in a bowl that you have greased with olive oil. Set the dough in a warm, dry place and cover with a towel to let it rise.
Let the dough rise for about 30 minutes and then punch it down.
Let the dough rise another 30 minutes. Make sure to put the towel back over the bowl. This is a great time to get your briquettes ready, about 40.
Once your bread has risen for the second time form it into a ball and place it a well seasoned Dutch oven or on a Dutch oven liner.
I found these parchment Dutch oven liners on Amazon, and they worked so well for this bread recipe. I did have to cut it down a bit to make it fit in my 10 inch Dutch oven.
The bread is ready for baking!
Baking
Baking with a Dutch oven can be a bit tricky, but it is so worth the effort.
For this recipe I wanted to bake the bread at a hot temperature. So I placed 27 hot briquettes on top of the lid and about 10 below. This would bake the bread at about 425 degrees.
I set my timer for 20 minutes and checked my bread at 15 minutes. It was done! Baking times will vary, make sure to check your bread. You want it to be a nice golden brown on top.
This is the prettiest bread I have ever made! It was perfect!
It was baked perfectly all the way through with a crispy golden crust. I didn’t even burn the bottom, which I do often when baking with my Dutch oven.
Dutch Oven Baking
Baking Dutch Oven No knead Bread was a bit of an experiment that I am so glad I did. Don’t be afraid to bake your old recipes a new way in a Dutch oven. You may be surprised how well they turn out.
Give this recipe or another of my Dutch oven recipes like Cajun Pasta or Macaroni and Cheese a try on your next camping adventure or family backyard cookout.
