Caramel Apple Dump Cake in a Dutch Oven
We made Caramel Apple Dump Cake in our Dutch Oven on our first night of camping at O’Leno State Park. It was a snap to put together and made for a tasty treat with our campfire dinner of roasted hot dogs.
Ingredients for Caramel Apple Dump Cake
There are only 4 ingredients to this simple dessert. The vanilla ice cream is optional. We brought single serve ice cream cups with us to fit into our tiny freezer in the camper. They worked out really well for this dessert and our camping trip.
- 1 Yellow Box Cake Mix
- Stick of Butter (melted)
- Can of Apples
- Caramel Sauce (as much or a little as you prefer)
- Vanilla Ice Cream (optional)
Directions
Just like the name of this dessert says you are going to dump the ingredients into a well seasoned Dutch Oven or use a Dutch Oven liner that is well sprayed with a cooking spray. Make sure if you do use a liner that it is the correct size for your Dutch Oven.
The first thing you want to do is get your briquettes ready for the Dutch Oven. You will need about 21 briquettes, but have a few extra.
Assembly your ingredients outside on your picnic table. Make sure you have packed a can opener before your trip or this next step is going to be difficult.
Dump your can of apples into the foil liner or directly into your seasoned Dutch Oven.
Next pour as much or a little caramel sauce on top of the apples.
We may have added a bit much!
Then dump the cake mix on top of the caramel and apples.
Finally pour the melted butter on top of the cake mix.
Top with caramel sauce and you are ready to bake!
Baking
Your briquettes should be ready for baking. You will want to have about 14 briquettes on the top lid of the Dutch Oven and about 7 below. This will get your temperature close to 350 degrees. Let it bake for approximately 40 minutes, making sure to check it frequently. Baking times will vary with a Dutch Oven.
You don’t want to burn it, but you do want the top to be a nice golden brown.
This is not a great picture of Caramel Apple Dump Cake because it was dark when it finally finished baking. My oldest son was holding a light above it as I tried to take a picture. But it was so pretty!
Remove the Dutch Oven from the bottom briquettes and set in a secure location. Let it cool for 5-10 minutes before serving.
The Caramel Apple Dump Cake was amazing and even better with vanilla ice cream!
Refrigerate what is left and eat it the next day. It taste even better!
Baking with a Dutch Oven
Baking with a Dutch Oven is a fabulous way to cook outside when camping. There are so many great recipes to try.
Just make sure to use caution when baking with a Dutch Oven. They can get really hot. I highly recommend heat resistant gloves, a Dutch Oven lid lifter and a Dutch Oven lid stand when using your Dutch Oven.
