A Weekend Camping Adventure at Silver Springs
If you crave an outdoor adventure Silver Springs State Park is the perfect camping destination for you. Enjoy hiking, kayaking and glass bottom boat tours in this historically famous park.
Silver Springs State Park
Silver Springs has been a popular tourist destination since the 1820’s. People have been drawn to this area because of the crystal clear waters and abundant wildlife. There are monkeys in the park, but as hard as we tried we were not lucky enough to spot one.
The park has been privately owned for over a hundred years. It is best known for its glass bottom boat tours and as a movie set location. The state of Florida took over the park in 2013, the famous boat tours still continue.
Camping
Don’t make the same mistake we did when pulling into the campground. Do not pull into the main Silver Springs entry on Highway 40, instead turn on Highway 35 to reach the camping entrance. It’s a little confusing. There is a hiking path to the main park from the campground, but we choose to drive each time.
The campsites are huge and leave you with plenty of privacy. I loved our pull-in site #56. It was easy to get in and out of and was level. All sites come with electric and water. A few of the sites are full hook ups, but they go fast. A picnic table, fire ring and grill are also provided.
The bathhouses were centrally located and immaculate. Never ending hot water, as my eleven year old said.
Pets are welcomed at the campsites. Just follow the rules and clean up after them.
Hiking
The hiking trails are located near the campground. These well marked trails are for all age groups and are perfect for exploring Florida’s nature.
We only had time to hike the River Trail. It was an easy hike, but beautiful. Make sure to bring the bug spray, the mosquitoes were horrible. The views of the river make up for it.
Cracker Village
The Cracker Village is part of the Marion County Educational program. It boarders on the Sink Hole Trail. My youngest son and I explored it after hours, looking for a geocache. We found the cache and quickly took a self guided tour of the village. I honestly don’t know if it is allowed, because it is roped off, but the buildings were so amazing to look at. The museum and educational center are both currently closed to visitors.
Kayaking
Kayaking at Silver Springs is a must! This was an amazing adventure for our family and we absolutely loved it.
Paddle sports at Silver Springs are very popular. Rentals are available or bring your own for a low launch fee. Learn more about kayak, canoe and paddleboard rentals here.
I am not an experienced kayaker, but my oldest son and I were able to do the Fort King Paddle Trail. It is really is just a giant loop and was fairly easy to paddle. Don’t be afraid to try it, it is such a great experience and a fantastic way to see wildlife and nature up close.
The water colors of this spring are amazing. Kayaking the springs is one experience you will never forget.
Glass Bottom Tours
The world famous Glass Bottom Tours at Silver Springs is another must do at the park. This is a fantastic way to view the clear springs and really see how amazing Florida’s springs are. The tours range from 30 minutes to the extended tours. We took the extended tour, which was about an hour and a half. It was an incredible tour. The guide was full of stories and very knowledgeable about Silver Springs. I would recommend booking a tour ahead of time to get a spot. They are popular for a good reason. Your can find more information here.
This is a wonderful tour for all age groups. The views are stunning no matter where you look. And you may spot an alligator of two.
