Dutch Baby in a Dutch Oven

What is a Dutch Baby? A Dutch Baby is basically a huge, fluffy pancake that is usually baked in a hot skillet. I baked ours in a Dutch Oven on our camping trip at Kelly Park, with amazing results. Topped with canned cherries and a sprinkle of powdered sugar it will make the perfect dessert after a day of exploring.

Dutch Baby Recipe

  • 3 Eggs
  • 1/2 Cup Milk
  • 2 Tablespoons Sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon Vanilla
  • 3/4 Cup Flour
  • Dash of Salt
  • 1 Can Cherry Pie Filling
  • Confectioners’ Sugar to taste
  • Whipped Topping

Begin by whisking the eggs together in a bowl. Add the milk, sugar, and vanilla to the eggs. Mix ingredients. Next add the flour and salt, mixing well. Pour the batter into a well-seasoned Dutch Oven or Dutch Oven liner that has been well-greased. Bake at approximately 425 degrees for 20 minutes. Dutch Oven baking times will vary. While still warm top with cherries, sprinkle with confections’ sugar and whipped topping if desired.

Ingredients for a Dutch Baby

If you plan on making the Dutch Baby on a camping trip, I would recommend mixing the dry ingredients, flour, sugar, and salt, together before the trip. Store them in a small bowl with a lid or in a baggie. This will save time and free up some space in the camper. Also purchase the 1/2 dozen carton of eggs if available, it fits so much easier into the small camper refrigerators than the regular sized carton of eggs. Unless of course you have a bigger refrigerator than I do and love eggs for breakfast when camping.

I did use skim milk when making the Dutch Baby, I don’t think it matters what type you use. Whole or 2% should be fine. I do not know about almond or any other plant-based milk.

Some campers like the Dutch Baby served warm with fresh fruit or a bit of maple syrup. It is an easy dish that can be made plain or dressed up. I personally loved it with the cherries.

Directions

I know not many campers will have a whisk with them, especially tent campers, but beat the eggs in the bowl the best you can before adding the vanilla, milk, and sugar. If you have the sugar in with the flour mixture just add it when the wet ingredients are mixed well.

Once mixed, pour the batter into a well-seasoned Dutch Oven or a Dutch Oven liner. I poured my batter directly into my Dutch Oven this time.

You will need approximately 27 briquettes, 18 on the lid of the Dutch Oven and 9 below, to bake at 425 degrees for 20 minutes. The easiest way to prepare the briquettes is to use a grilling chimney. Please use caution, the briquettes are hot. It is recommended that heat-resistant gloves and long-handled tongs are used to handle the briquettes.

Dutch Oven Baking

Baking times will vary with Dutch Ovens. If it doesn’t look puffy when you lift the lid, bake the Dutch Baby a bit longer and rotate the lid.

As soon as you lift the lid, if it is done, the Dutch Baby will be puffy. In a matter a seconds it will fall and hopefully leave a nice little bowl to put your toppings in.

There are many ways to serve your Dutch Baby, but seriously how pretty is it with the cherries? It tasted amazing as our dessert with our camping food of burgers. It just takes camp food up a notch. Don’t forget the whipped cream!

Try it plain, dusted with powdered sugar or just a drizzle of syrup or honey. Different types of fresh berries or canned pie filling would also be amazing to try. No matter your preference it is sure to be fantastic. Happy Camping!
