An Awesome Weekend of Camping at Hillsborough River State Park

Our family enjoyed a quiet and relaxing weekend of camping at Hillsborough River State Park located in Thonotosassa, Florida. This well loved state park is located near Tampa, making it a great weekend get-away for central Floridians.

Hillsborough River State Park

Hillsborough River State Park officially opened in 1938 as one of Florida’s first State Parks. It was a project of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) of the 1930’s. A few of the original buildings and structures can still be found today.

Camping

Camping at Hillsborough River State Park

Most the of campsites at Hillsborough River State Park were roomy and well laid out. Site 113, which was our site was a bit wonky. It is made for smaller trailers or tent camping. If you have a bigger trailer than our 17′ Jayco, you might want to select another site. It was a bit of pain to back into, but is definitely doable with a bit of patience and of heavy dose of tenacity. When we booked the campsite, there were not many sites available and our options were limited. So honestly, we were lucky to get a site at this amazing state park.

There are three campsite loops at the park. Each with a restroom and shower building. Most sites have electric, and water hookups. All sites have a picnic table and fire ring. A central dump station is also located in the camping area. Primitive camping is available in a different area of the park.

Although we didn’t take our dog, this is a pet friendly park. There are leash requirements that need to be followed. And of course, pick up after your pet!

Canoeing/Kayaking

Canoeing at Hillsborough River State Park

This was such a beautiful park to explore, especially via a canoe. If you get the chance, take the time to rent a kayak or canoe and get out on the river to experience the wonder of this of magnificent waterway.

Kayaks and canoes can be rented at the park, near the pool. The pool is currently closed for renovations, but the rental shop is open. You can also bring your own.

There are rapids in the river that you can paddle close to, but don’t get into them, because of hazards in the water. Getting there is a strenuous paddle up a fast current, but worth it. The way back, going with the current is a relaxing journey. Take your time and enjoy the views all around you. Just remember for all you amateur paddlers, paddle left to go right and paddle right to go left. I heard that so much this weekend, I think it has finally sunk in.

Hiking

Hiking at Hillsborough River State Park

There are five hiking trails to explore at Hillsborough River State Park. The easy rated ones, like River Rapids Trail (1.2 Miles) and the Baynard Trail (1.1 Miles) were perfect for us. It was hot last weekend and the shade of the trails helped. We wanted to explore the park, but not overexert ourselves with the heat. We found the suspension bridge and viewed the rapids up close. If you only want to hike a little bit, but experience some amazing views, I recommend those two trails.

For the more hardy hiker, the Seminole Trail and the Fort King Trail are going to be more your speed. Take plenty of water and bug spray no matter which trail you take.
