Quick and Easy Cheesy Ranch Potatoes in a Dutch Oven
We made a quick and easy potato side dish on our last camping trip at Wekiwa Springs State Park. These cheesy ranch potatoes made in a Dutch Oven were the perfect compliment to our grilled hamburgers on a cool night.
Cheesy Ranch Potatoes
- 2 Cans of Whole Potatoes
- Ranch Dressing Seasoning Packet
- Drizzle of Olive Oil
- 1 Cup Shredded Cheddar Cheese
Open and drain the canned potatoes. Quarter the potatoes and place directly into a well seasoned Dutch Oven or a greased Dutch Oven liner. Drizzle olive oil over the top of the potatoes. Next add the the ranch seasoning packet. Stir the potatoes making sure they are well coated with oil and ranch seasoning. Top with a cheese. Place 14 briquettes on the top lid of the Dutch Oven and 7 below to bake at 350º for approximately 25 minutes. Baking times will vary.
Ingredients for Cheesy Ranch Potatoes
I have never used canned potatoes before and was a bit skeptical on how they would taste in this dish. Using the canned potatoes saved so much time. I didn’t have to peel them, or pre-cook them and they tasted the same. You could use raw potatoes, but you will have to increase your baking time. I was racing daylight to get this side dish done and those canned potatoes saved the day.
Make sure to also only drizzle the olive oil on the potatoes. You do not need much, just enough to coat the potatoes.
It doesn’t matter what type of cheese you use, just sprinkle on your favorite. Use as much or as little as you need. I used about a cup and it was perfect for us.
Directions
Making Cheesy Ranch Potatoes was one the simplest recipes I have done using my Dutch Oven. This quick recipe only requires a few easy steps.
Drain the canned potatoes, don’t forget your can opener. Quarter the potatoes and place into either a well seasoned Dutch Oven or use a greased Dutch Oven Liner.
Next coat with just a little bit of olive oil and sprinkle the ranch seasoning on top of the potatoes. Mix well, making sure to evenly coat all the potatoes.
Finally top with a sprinkle of cheese.
Baking
Make sure that you have around 21 briquettes hot and ready to go. I found that using a grilling chimney is great way to do this. Place 14 briquettes on the top lid and 7 below to get the temperature to 350º for baking. I use a Lodge 10 inch Dutch Oven. If you use a different size the briquette ratio will be different. Consult your user manual for the correct number or use this chart.
Bake for approximately 25 minutes. Baking times, especially with a Dutch Oven will vary.
