Find the Best Campground to View the 2024 Solar Eclipse
Get ready for the show of a lifetime. On April 8th, 2024 a total solar eclipse will be visible in the United States. Now is the time to find the best campground and secure your reservation to view the 2024 Solar Eclipse. Reservations are filling up fast along the path of totality from Texas to Maine. Don’t miss this spectacular event with my partnership with Campspot to find the perfect spot to view the eclipse.
Texas
The eclipse will be visible in the larger cities of Texas next year, such as Dallas and San Antonio. But find a campsite out of town in the country that will allow for amazing views if only for a few moments.
One of the best places to camp will be Hidden Grove RV Resort in Honey Grove, TX. The campground offers many activities such as hiking and kayaking as you wait for the solar eclipse. RV spots are available as well as cabins. Primitive camping is also offered.
Oklahoma
A beautiful campground to check out for those in Oklahoma will be Heaven’s Gate RV Park in Muse. This remote park is located in the Ouachita Mountains. There are only 13 sites with electricity and water, but primitive sites are available. The campground is just outside of the center line of totality, but you will still be able to view the solar eclipse.
Arkansas
Finding a campground near Little Rock is a sure bet to view the eclipse. If you want a bit of an adventure and don’t mind roughing it a bit head towards Hot Springs and the Hot Springs Off-Road Park in Arkansas.
Tennessee
I could not find a campground in the path of the eclipse. Tennessee is only going to get a sliver of the path near Cates Landing. If you want to camp and try to drive to see it maybe try the Reelfoot Lake State Park in Tiptonville, Tennessee.
Kentucky
Paducah is again in the total eclipse path although most of Kentucky as a whole is left out. The Birdsville Riverside RV Park would be a good spot to stay for the eclipse. I did a test reservation and could not find any spots open. It could be full or not taking reservations so early in advance. Regardless Paducah is where you want to be.
Missouri
Check out the winner of the 2023 Campspot Awards for a great viewing spot. Otahki Lake Cabins and Campground is the perfect spot in Missouri to see the solar eclipse. This beautiful campground boast many family friendly attractions to keep everyone entertained.
Illinois
Campgrounds near Carbondale are the spot to be in Illinois, unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be very many around. If you are having trouble finding a spot reserve a campsite at Giant City State Park in Makanda, Illinois. The park opens to campers April, 1st, depending on the weather and it is in the path of the eclipse.
Indiana
Bloomington, Indianapolis and Terre Haute will be in the eclipse totality path in 2024. To find a campground check out Wheelock Lake Campground in Dillsboro, Indiana. Enjoy hiking, fishing and kayaking at this campground.
Ohio
The path of the Solar Eclipse will be going through some majors cities such as Springfield, Dayton, and Cleveland to name a few. If you can get a spot check out Off the Hook Campground in Camden, Ohio. This looks like such a fun place to camp, especially if you enjoy fishing.
Michigan
Like with Tennessee, Michigan will only see a sliver of the eclipse. I can honestly say I couldn’t not find a campground in the path.
Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania will see a bit of the eclipse. Try Presque Isle Passage RV Park and Cabins for a reservation in Fairview, Pennsylvania. The campground is close to Lake Erie which will also be a great place to view the solar eclipse.
New York
The state of New York will have great views of the solar eclipse. The cities of Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse as well as Niagara Falls are all in the path. Port Bay Campground still has reservations available at the time of this posting. This family owned campground offers cabin and RV campsites.
Vermont and New Hampshire
Campgrounds in Vermont and New Hampshire are evidently closed during this time. You could always camp in your backyard if you live in the solar eclipse path. Cities that will be in the path are Burlington and Montpelier in Vermont and Lancaster, and Dixville Notch in New Hampshire.
Maine
The solar eclipse will make it way through rural Maine as it head towards Canada. And again I couldn’t find a campground in the path that is open or available in April 2024 in Maine. But if you live near Caribou you have a good chance of seeing the eclipse.
Resources
Do your research before making a reservation or planning your Solar Eclipse camping trip. To find if a city you are interested in going to is in the path, check out this helpful website I found, Eclipse 2024. It will guide you through the solar eclipse path and the towns and cities it passes, as well as where to find the best views.
Another great website is Solarsystem by NASA that explains the solar eclipse and well as safety guidelines that you should follow when viewing the eclipse.
And don’t forget your camping gear and viewing glasses (make sure they comply with the ISO 12312-2 international standard). Happy Camping!
