Must See and Things to Do in Savannah With Kids
Grab the kids and explore the historic city of Savannah, Georgia a city full of stories of pirates, mysteries, and ghosts. Spark their imagination while transversing the cobblestone streets of Savannah as they take a step back in time viewing amazing architecture and art. Here is a list of must-see things to do in Savannah.
Forsyth Park
Take a stroll through ten acres of beautifully landscaped Forsyth Park. The famous fountain is the star of the park and an iconic place to take photos.
There is a playground for kids to burn off energy and open spaces to run. A farmer’s market is held on Saturdays, but be sure to arrive early for this popular event as produce sells out quickly.
Cathedral Basilica Of St. John The Baptist
Kids will be in awe at the beauty of the historic Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist. My teenage boy certainly was. From the tall ceilings to the colorful stained glass windows, they will not know where to look first. This is a prime example of the French Gothic style of architecture. Respect visiting hours as this is an active Catholic Church with standard mass times.
Leopold’s Ice Cream
Cool off from all the walking at Leopold’s Ice Cream. With several tried and true flavors, kids are sure to find one they love. I can vouch for the Lemon Custard, absolutely amazing!
Historic Waterfront on River Street
Take a stroll along the Savannah River and visit the many shops and restaurants along River Street. A couple of our favorites were River Street Sweets and the Savannah Bee Company. Be careful on the stairs to the waterfront, they are no joke.
Fort Pulaski National Monument
Just outside the city of Savannah is Fort Pulaski National Monument. For the history buffs and for kids that love to explore forts this is the place for you. Steeped in history from the American Revolution to the Civil War this fort has stood with grace and determination with the help of amazing engineering for its time.
Tybee Island
Located 18 miles from downtown Savannah is Tybee Island. The perfect place for a beach break to unwind and relax in the sun. This is “Savannah’ Beach” and has a small-town beach feel that makes everyone feel welcome.
Ghost Tour
Take a ghost tour if you dare. There are several tour companies to pick from, from riding ones to walking tours. We picked Ghosts and Gravestones by Old Town Trolly Tours. We have used this company before in St. Augustine, Florida. It’s great for kids, and not that scary. It can be a bit cheesy, and adults and teens will roll their eyes, but it is an informative tour with spooky ghost stories. Reservations are required and they do book up fast.
Helpful Hints
A couple of things to know before you go. Parking is a hassle. If you find a great spot, keep it as long as you can and walk around historic Savannah. You’ll see amazing buildings and shops to explore. Wear comfortable shoes for all that walking.
A couple of places to eat are Poe’s Tavern, an old fire station turned restaurant dedicated to Edgar Allan Poe. It has a great child’s menu and a wide variety of choices for teens and adults alike. And the one place I wanted to go, but didn’t have the time was The Pirates’ House. Rumored to be haunted and serving great food it is located in one of Savannah’s oldest buildings.
We camped at Creekfire RV Resort during our trip. This was a fantastic location for us and we loved the amenities provided.
If this is your first trip to Savannah I recommend making your first stop at the Visit Savannah Information Center. The ladies here were so helpful and helped us plan our walking tour of downtown Savannah. There are also several tour companies based around here if you would like a riding tour of the city.
