Crooked River State Park, Georgia
Our last camping trip of the year was spent at Crooked River State Park in Georgia. It wasn’t ideal camping weather with all the rain and cloud overcast. I don’t think we saw the sun the whole trip, but we didn’t let it dampen our camping adventure.
Crooked River State Park
Crooked River State Park, Georgia is ideally located just over the Florida border outside the small town of St. Marys. It was a fairly short drive for us and was a great location to explore the coast.
We had hoped to visit nearby Cumberland Island, but didn’t realize that ferry reservations were highly recommend. We missed out because of our lack of planning, but hope to come back. If you do plan a trip to Cumberland Island make sure to have those ferry reservations well beforehand!
We instead ventured south to Amelia Island and explored the Florida State Parks located on the island. I highly recommend a trip to Amelia Island if you are nearby. Click here to read about the state parks we visited.
Camping
The campsites at this state park were huge compared to what we normally reserve when camping. There was plenty of room between sites leaving space for the boys to play and run around without the worry of them intruding on neighboring campsites.
Every site had a picnic table and fire ring. Which we put to good use during our two nights at the campground. Thankfully were able to use it both times just before it rained on us.
My youngest loved that the roads were paved. He rode his new hoverboard from Santa all over the campground. There were lots of kids and adults biking as well.
This is definitely a family friendly campground with lots of activities for everyone to enjoy. As well a number of playgrounds scattered around the park for the kids to burn energy. There is even a miniature golf course. We didn’t get to play because of all the rain, but it looked like it would fun!
Hiking
We did mange to get in a short hike our first day at the campground. We took the River Trial running along Crooked River and the salt marshes.
This trail was a bit washed out in areas, but offered beautiful views of the river.
The trees in their different states of life, from the old weathered ones,
to those just starting out, made for fascinating observations of nature.
This was a fun trail to take, but there are several others we didn’t get a chance to hike.
If you go
If you plan on making reservations at Crooked River State Park make sure to know what you plan doing during your stay and plan accordingly. Also pack your bug spray. The Sand Gnats were not only annoying but they bite!
This is a beautiful, peaceful campground with enough amenities to keep you busy, but close enough to area attractions that you want to explore.
The park itself was immaculate with very clean bath houses. The staff works hard at this campground and it shows.
Check out High Falls State Park were we stayed during Spring Break. Another great Georgia State Park to visit.
Happy Camping!
