Exploring the Famous and Historic Mark Twain Cave
Mark Twain Cave is a national landmark located just outside of historic Hannibal, Missouri. Discovered in 1820 by accident when a man was trying to locate his dog. It became a local attraction of unexplored passageways that sparked the imagination of children and adults.
Samuel Clemens, under his pen name Mark Twain made this cave famous when he wrote about it his stories, notably, the book The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Although Mark Twain’s books have come under scrutiny in recent years because of their controversial text, don’t let that stop you from visiting this natural wonder. The cave itself is a mysterious labyrinth of twist and turns ready to be explored.
Mark Twain Cave Tours
Make sure to take the 60 minute guided walking tour of Mark Twain Cave. You will learn the history of the cave through brief stories as you follow the path of Tom and Becky. The paths in the cave can be narrow. If you are at all claustrophobic, this might not be the cave tour for you.
If you have the time and are up for a bit of a spooky adventure, check out the neighboring Cameron Cave. This is an unlit cave tour. Flashlights are handed out for tours. I have done this tour in the past, and it is definitely worth it.
What to Wear in the Mark Twain Cave
The Mark Twain Cave stays at a constant 52ยบ year round. It is a bit chilly. Make sure to wear something comfortable and warm. My younger sister wore this super soft and comfortable top from Paka. Check out the company and their clothing line, truly an inspiring company.
Make sure to wear close toed shoes that have a bit of traction on them. Leave the flip flops at home. The path is slick in places and you do not want to fall.
Camping
There is a campground on site. Although I didn’t get a chance to stay there it seems to be very well maintained and has good reviews. The campground is walking distance to the caves located nearby. It also has full hook-ups during normal camping months and dry camping in the off season. You can find more information here.

Make sure to explore Historic Downtown Hannibal. We found our favorite stop to be the Dutch Country General Store. A candy lovers dream. Of course the kids couldn’t get enough of it.
