Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive Is the Best Florida Secret Most Tourists Miss
Most tourists will miss one of the best scenic drives offered in Florida. The Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive is a local secret for birdwatchers, alligator observers, and Florida nature lovers, all from the comfort of your vehicle.

This 11-mile drive will take about two hours, depending on traffic. It is a one-way road that meanders through a wildlife refuge along Lake Apopka. It begins at Lust Road and ends on Jones Avenue. This is a slow drive with a speed limit of 10 mph. It will give you plenty of time to marvel at Lake Apopka’s wildlife.

Things to Bring
Make sure to bring your patience. There can be many drivers on the road, all trying to view the same alligator swimming alongside them. They are going to stop to take pictures, just like you. There are pull-offs for viewing or getting out of the way of passing cars, but not many. There are hikers and bike riders to watch out for as well. Be careful if exiting the vehicle to take a photo; the alligators are closer than you think.

Be sure to bring snacks and drinks; don’t share with the wildlife, no matter how cute they are. It can be a long drive with nothing to munch on, especially if you have the kids with you.

Make sure you have a full tank of gas. You don’t know exactly how long this drive will take you, and this is probably not the best place to run out of gas.
Bring your binoculars. You’ll want to view the birds off in the distance or an alligator closely from the safety of your vehicle. Kids will love to have their own on this driving safari through the wetlands.
For more information and days the drive is open, visit the St. Johns River Water Management District. You can also download an audio tour of the drive here.
