Top 5 Things to Pack to Glacier National Park

We just got back from exploring beautiful Glacier National Park. This iconic national park boasts over 1 million acres of pristine wilderness, making it a top destination for adventurers and nature lovers alike. But with so much to see and explore, it can be overwhelming to decide what essentials to bring with you. Fear not, as we have narrowed down the top 5 things you should pack for your unforgettable Glacier National Park experience. So grab your hiking shoes and let’s dive into the must-haves for this breathtaking destination. Here is a list of our top five things that we truly needed on our trip.

Bear Spray

Bear Spray

The one thing you need to have, that you hope to never use, is bear spray. You cannot pack it on the airplane, but if you are driving to the park, make sure to have it handy. You can rent bear spray at the airport and at other locations surrounding Glacier National Park, or purchase it at gift shops inside the park. Do not go on a hike alone or without bear spray; you are in bear territory.

Hiking Shoes

Keen Hiking Shoes

Don’t forget your hiking shoes! With so many hiking trails to explore, from easy trails to view waterfalls to very challenging hikes to see a glacier, whatever your ability, the proper hiking shoes are worth the investment.

Hiking Poles

Hiking Poles

Hiking poles would have made climbing steep hills so much easier! I really wish I had these when going on a challenging hike to see a mountain waterfall. These are great for hiking and are collapsible for easy packing.

Backpack

Backpack

Choose a backpack that is lightweight with a bonus water bladder if you plan on doing a lot of hiking. You will need a backpack to carry your gear for exploring the park, but don’t put your bear spary in the bottom of the bag, that won’t do you any good.

Packable Rain Jacket

Packable Rain Jacket

The weather can start off sunny on your hike, then turn cloudy and rainy an hour in. Make sure to be prepared with a packable rain jacket that won’t take up much room in your backpack when not in use.

Glacier National Park was amazing. I truly hope you have time to explore this magnificent park and enjoy it as much as we did.

Bonus: Hiking Trails Your Teenager Won’t Hate

Avalanche Lake Trail

Avalanche Lake

This trail is a little over four miles round trip, a little challenging with steep hills, but worth it at the end. Hiking back is much easier. Parking is a pain; go very early in the morning.

Sun Point Nature Trail – Baring Falls, St. Mary Falls, and Virginia Falls

Virgina Falls - Glacier National Park

This hike about killed me, but my teenager loved it. We saw three amazing waterfalls, with Virginia Falls being the best. When you think you have reached it, you haven’t; keep climbing, and climbing. The trail can get crowded, so go early in the morning.
