A Day of Exploration at Kennedy Space Center

We spent a day with both of our boys exploring Kennedy Space Center on Merritt Island. It’s just a short drive from our home near the Orlando area. If you are camping nearby it is fantastic place to spend the day, especially if you have a space enthusiast in the family like we do.

What to Do

There are so many activities and exhibits to discover at Kennedy Space Center. Make sure to grab a map or download one here. Be sure to also check the event calendar. You may be lucky enough to witness a launch live from one of the viewing stands. Launches are happening more frequently at the Space Coast.

Not a launch day for us, so we went directly to the IMAX theater and caught the next showing just in time. The kids loved it. You feel totally immersed in the atmosphere of space. Definitely put it on your “to do list”. There is also a children’s area, Planet Play, that is located in the IMAX building. My kids were too old for this, but it looks like a blast for the younger kids.

Next we went to the Atlantis Exhibit. This is also where the Shuttle Launch Experience is located. That was an amazing experience and one not to miss.

Airstream Astrovan at NASA

Make sure to find the famous Airstream Astrovan that carried astronauts to the Space Shuttle launch pad for their NASA missions.

We then took the shuttle bus to the Apollo/Saturn V Center, passing the Vehicle Assembly Building on our way. This is a relaxing mini tour of a small portion of the grounds and very informative.

Be sure to find Snoopy the Astronaut as you explore the Apollo/Saturn V Center.

Lastly we visited the Space Mirror Memorial and the Rocket Garden.

What to Expect

Expect crowds, especially on launch days. Kennedy Space Center is a very busy place and a popular tourist attraction.

Expect your kids to become space fanatics after your visit here. After all the hands on training and exploring they have done, they are going to be excited about space and all the wonders it holds.

Expect a lot of walking. Wear comfortable shoes.

Expect to have an amazing time and don’t forget to buy your NASA T-shirt at the gift shop.

Where to Camp

One of the best places to camp near Kennedy Space Center is Jetty Park Campground at Port Canaveral. It can be difficult to get into, we have yet to find a campsite when we want it. But if you are flexible you may have better luck. Also check out Campspot for help finding a campground with open sites available during your dates.
