Salt Springs Recreation Area
Our weekend camping adventure was to Salt Springs Recreation Area. This was an easy drive for us because it was located so close to our home. It made it a relaxing, stress free weekend, full of adventure. Salt Springs Recreation Area is located in the Ocala National Forest in Florida. It is located about 35 miles from Ocala in Marion County. Campsites We loved this campsite. It had everything we needed. There are extra long picnic tables, grills, and fire pits at each site. Not to mention they are also full hook ups for RVs. The paved parking pad was an added bonus. These are spacious sites with plenty of…

Caramel Corn
We are getting excited for our next camping adventure next weekend. Hopefully this mild Florida weather will continue with sunny days and cool evenings. Perfect weather for camping. With the Super Bowl tomorrow and coming up with an easy snack to munch on while camping I found my sister’s Caramel Corn Recipe in the bicentennial cookbook my hometown publish a few years ago. I have never made it before but have ate a lot of it. It was an easy recipe to follow and taste so much better than store bought caramel popcorn. I will be making it again, probably next weekend for the campout. I mention my sister a…

Kayak Supplies For Amateurs
If you have read my blog about Blue Spring State Park, you already know that this was our first time taking the kayak out on the water. This was a great place to start for amateurs. The workers at the launch site were very helpful. The water was relatively calm and not overcrowded with other boaters. Plenty of room to work out the kinks and learn how to kayak. It took my husband awhile to get his balance with the kayak and learn how to maneuver it. Evidently it is different from a paddling a canoe. He quickly got the hang of it and paddled up and down the St.…

Blue Spring State Park
It was such a gorgeous day in Florida we decided to finally try out the kayak. We chose a spring close to our home, Blue Spring State Park. The spring is located in Orange City, Volusia County. This is a popular park on the weekends especially November-March when the Manatees are wintering here. The park will not allow cars in when it reaches capacity. Arrive early if possible. We of course didn’t and had a small wait to get in. It was worth it! Manatees If you are ever in Florida in the winter months this is such a beautiful park to observe Manatees. The water is crystal clear. It…

New Year, New Logo
Happy New Year Amateur Camper is officially one year old! It’s hard to believe my little idea for a blog has grown so much in one year. I hope to continue to grow this coming year, with more blog posts, camping recipes, and product reviews. There are several campgrounds we are scouting out to visit and explore in the coming months. We are hoping to do a camping trip that lets the boys try out their new mountain bikes they got for their December birthdays. Believe it or not, Florida does have some great mountain bike trails. We can’t wait to get the boys out on them. We also want…
